Spring Break Camp vs. Screen Time: Why Active Breaks Matter

March Break arrives every year with the same parental dilemma: a full week off school, limited vacation days, and a child whose default plan involves a screen in every waking hour. While a little downtime is healthy, research from the Canadian Paediatric Society shows that extended sedentary screen time during school breaks is linked to disrupted sleep, increased irritability, and a harder transition back to the classroom.

Structured spring break camp offers a compelling alternative. At Laurus, our March Break programming packs each day with physical activity, creative projects, and social interaction — the exact ingredients that help children recharge rather than zone out. Mornings might feature team sports or outdoor exploration, afternoons bring arts workshops or science experiments, and the day ends with group reflection and free play. Children return home tired in the best way: physically active, socially fulfilled, and mentally stimulated.

The social dimension is especially important during breaks. School-aged children are in a critical period of social development, and a week without peer interaction can feel isolating. Camp provides a ready-made community where children practise cooperation, negotiation, and friendship-building in a supervised, supportive setting. Many of our March Break campers form friendships that carry into our summer programs, creating continuity and belonging across seasons.

Making the switch from screen time to camp does not have to be all-or-nothing. Start by framing camp as a special adventure rather than a replacement for something fun. Let your child choose an activity track that excites them — whether that is sports, arts, STEM, or outdoor adventure. And if your child pushes back, remind them that camp still leaves evenings free for their favourite shows and games. The goal is balance, and a week of active, engaged programming gives children the reset they need to finish the school year strong.
