As time passes, so does parenting styles and methods.
I grew up in a traditional family where strict rules implemented by my parents needed to be followed with no questions. Growing up, I had to follow house rules and routines to a T. One little mistake and I had to stand in the corner for hours or lose my privilege of nighttime television.
As I become a parent myself, I don’t want my daughter to grow up fearing me just like how I did with my parents. I wanted to be the perfect epitome of what a cool and hip mom is. But I realized that being way too lax is not good either. As I’m finding it hard to find balance in my parenting skills, I came into a realization that traditional parenting is not synonymous with rods and belts.
There are a lot of good things about traditional parenting that modern parents can benefit from. Here are some of the timeless parenting tips that we can all apply to raise our children to become independent and empowered members of society.
As soon as the baby reaches 3 months old, most of us start sleep training them. Nothing feels more victorious than closing the door of their nursery room so that you can have a peaceful sleep in the comfort of your own bedroom.
For me, it’s an entirely different story. I have been co-sleeping with my 3-year-old daughter since she was a baby. Initially, I did it because it was easier for me to breastfeed her when she was sleeping next to me. Now, I simply couldn’t resist the sweet snuggles and wet kisses until we both go to slumberland.
Most parents frown at me when I tell them that I’m co-sleeping with my child. I believe that it’s our family’s preference and sleeping with your child has several benefits. Contrary to popular belief, children who sleep with their parents become more independent and perform well in school. Of course, you can never dismiss the strong bond that you form as you cuddle each night. The power of touch and being physically close creates a special closeness between parents and children.
Both kids and parents get more sleep too. When scary nightmares wake your little kid at night, you can easily comfort him and lull him back to sleep. When your kid wakes up happy, you wake up happy too! What better way to start your day than waking up next to the person you love?
“Raising a child is one of the hardest jobs in the world” I’m pretty sure that a lot of us find this statement relatable.
Though a lot of single parents were able to raise a child by themselves, it would be much easier if there is help from friends, other family members, and the community. Parents need all the support that they can get to raise a well-rounded child.
Thankfully, you can find support groups easier because of social media. Find a support group that is interactive and carries the same parenting and moral value as you do.
If you don’t want your child to grow up spoiled and entitled, you have to make him understand that freedom is a privilege to be earned.
When a child demonstrates good judgment and behavior consistently, then he can get more freedom. For example, if he helps with the dishes then he can watch TV or play video games afterward. When he picks after his mess regularly, he is allowed for more screen time. And so on.
When he breaks a rule, then a small increment of that freedom can be taken away. This traditional parenting tip is relevant to raise your child to become a disciplined and law-abiding citizen.
One of the most basic needs of a child is the parent’s love and attention.
My first instinct when I hear my daughter cry is to go to her and attend to her immediately. Though she’s mostly incoherent in between sobs, my hugs and warmth will comfort her right away.
When a child feels constantly loved and cared for, he grows up to be independent and well-rounded. We should be a safe haven for our children, a place where they should not only receive love but also acceptance.
